FOOD FOR PREGNANCY

During pregnancy, mothers must focus on maintaining a balanced and nutritious diet. They must get a list of healthy food and meal planning tips from doctor to eat well during a pregnancy.

One should always remember, the baby inside depends on you for proper nutrition. So, if you will take healthy & balanced diet your child will become healthy and so will you.

Pregnancy is the most nutritionally demanding period in all women’s life. Pregnancy deals with rapid cell division and organ development of the baby. Adequate supply of nutrition is required to meet the increased demands of your body. During pregnancy eating should be pleasure as it is throughout life. Expected mothers should continue to enjoy their favorite foods in moderation .The nutritional needs are higher by 300 Calories over the pre-pregnant state. This will ensure that you will have adequate weight gain.

Most mothers-to-be think that they need to “eat for two” for proper growth of the baby. However, “eating for two” may not be always being required. If you are already above the ideal body weight (Obese) or have diabetes, you need not eat for two. The amount of food that you can eat during pregnancy is dependent on your physical activity, your pre-pregnant weight, and presence of any illness.

Almost all pregnant women need to get more protein, more of certain vitamins and minerals such as folic acid and iron, and more calories (for energy). If your diet is poor to begin with, making the transition to eating nutritious meals is one of the best things you can do for your baby's health.

But eating better doesn't mean eating more or rather, not much more. If you start off at a healthy weight, you need no extra calories during the first trimester, about 300 extra calories a day in the second trimester, and about 450 extra calories a day in the third trimester. If you're overweight or underweight, you'll need more or less than this, depending on your weight gain goal.

You could also eat folic acid-rich foods, such as the following, during your entire pregnancy.

MAGNESIUM:

Magnesium is essential for all muscle health, including your uterus. It helps to make and repair tissue, also. Luckily, it is plentiful in salad greens, nuts, soya beans, seeds (particularly pumpkin, melon and sunflower) and whole grains.

Vitamin A:

Vitamin A helps to keep your skin and the linings of your internal organs healthy. Eat plenty of reduced-fat dairy products, such as milk, yogurt, paneer and cheese, for their retinol (animal- derived vitamin A) content, remembering not to use out-of-date products.

Vitamin D:

Vitamin D are sunlight, dairy products especially milk, yoghurt, butter, margarine and paneer.

Fortified whole wheat breads and cereals like brown rice, whole wheat, and oats are very good for a healthy mother-to-be and baby too.

Fish and seafood are the best dietary sources of these nutrients, so make sure you use plenty of fish recipes. Fish is also an excellent source of iodine. If you don't eat fish, your doctor may advise you to take a supplement.

Many women find having ginger tea very helpful in relieving constipation. You can also substitute fresh fruit juices with fruits you will benefit from the fibre content of the fruits.

CALCIUM:

Calcium is important for nerve transmission and muscle contraction, as well as for healthy teeth and bones. As you are supplying calcium to your baby for her skeleton, make sure that you are eating plenty of calcium-rich foods, especially dairy foods and canned fish with bones.

Choose reduced-fat versions of dairy products as well as a balance of non-dairy sources of calcium to keep your fat intake down.

These foods are all rich in calcium:

·         Dry fruits such as almonds, figs, cashews, walnuts,

·         Apricots (dried), brazil nuts and peanuts

·         Coconut

·         Baked beans, rajma, soya bean

·         Cheese

·         Chickpeas

·         Canned fish (with bones)

·         Cottage cheese/paneer

·         Milk (including fortified soya milk) and other dairy products, such as paneer, curd, cheese, etc.

·         Tofu

·         Green vegetables such as spinach, parsley, broccoli, fenugreek leaves, drumstick leaves, cabbage, capsicum, tomatoes, amla.

·         Dry lotus stem

·         Yoghurts, ice-creams, buttermilk and lassi.

·         Fruits include oranges, strawberries, kiwi fruit, grapefruit, lemon, blackcurrants, cranberries and mangoes.

WATER:

Drink eight to ten large glasses of water a day in addition to any other drinks. In the hot humid weather increase your fluid intake to keep yourself hydrated. Avoid fizzy caffeinated and artificially flavored drinks and choose healthy and alcohol-free options such as fresh fruit and vegetable juices, coconut water, soups, and milk shakes, aam panna, lassi, buttermilk and milk shakes.

IRON:

Although some doctors like to recommend iron supplements to all pregnant women, they can cause constipation in some. If your doctor says that you are anemic, you may need to take iron supplements and also eat iron-rich foods, such as leafy greens, like spinach, mustard greens, fenugreek leave, mint, coriander, and radish, black grapes and pomegranate are good sources of iron.

Other iron rich foods are Lean red meat, poultry, fortified breakfast cereals, rice flakes, roasted bengal gram, wheat germ, wheat bran, and oat bran, dry fruits such as raisins, dates and canned sardines. You could also sip some lemonade or warm water to which grated amla is added along with your food. Try adding a dash of lemon juice to your salad, vegetables or dal -- the vitamin C in the lemon helps iron absorption.

FIBRE:

Fibre is essential for a healthy digestive system and to prevent constipation. It also helps to keep blood sugar levels constant. Fibre is derived from plant sources such as seeds, grains, fruit, vegetables and wholegrain cereals. Meat and dairy products do not have any fibre.

There are two types of fibre, soluble and insoluble, and you need both in your diet. Soluble fibre helps you to feel full for longer and releases sugars evenly into the blood. Insoluble fibre prevents constipation by moving food through the body quicker, and carrying away waste products in stools.

Below is the list of few soluble and insoluble list of fibre enriched food:

Mainly soluble fibre: apples, pears, bananas, berries, legumes like soybeans and peas, carrots, broccoli, oats, barley, pulses, root vegetables like onions, yams, potatoes and rye bread.

Mainly insoluble fibre: beans, corn, fruit and vegetables (especially with skin), vegetables like tomatoes, green beans, cauliflower, celery, green leafy vegetables, lentils, nuts, seeds, wheat bran, rice bran, brown rice and wholegrain cereals.

Speak to your doctor before changing your diet or if you are allergic to any particular source of food. Never take supplements unless your doctor has prescribed them.

Nutrition Facts. Nutrition Eating.

It pays to read and to understand the ingredients list and the nutrients information (NI) panel printed on the product. This will help you o evaluate if a health food is really beneficial as it advertises itself to be. Here are few tips:

What to look for?

1. Serving Size: This is based on, but not necessarily equal to, food amounts customarily eaten at one time eg: 30gm of bread or 200ml milk. They can also refer to a single serving of a food group like grains, vegetables or fruits. Sometimes, the NI panel shows calories and fat per serving and not per 100 gm of the product. This procedure may make the buyer think they are buying a lower calorie/fat product.

2. Calories and fat per serving: Knowing how much calorie/fat one serving provides lets you estimate how much you might consume in one sitting. Another option is to locate calories and fat per 100gm, approximate the amount (serving) you might consume in one sitting and calculate the calories/fat for that amount.

3. Percentage of RDA (recommended dietary allowances) supplied: To decide if the product will make a significant contribution to your dietary needs of a particular nutrient, say calcium or fibre or iron, find out what percentage of that nutrient’s RDA the total product amount supplied you with.

Example: If you are a woman looking to improve her calcium intake, you must first know that the RDA for calcium for women is 400mg/day. Now, if your packaged fruit juice contains 15 mg of calcium per 100 ml and comes in a 250ml pack, then you are going to derive about 38mg calcium provided you are a sole consumer of the pack. And, 38 mg is about 9.5 percent of your RDA. The same principle can be applied to all nutrients.

Remember you RDA gets modified during disease and life stages like pregnancy. Now that you know the percentage, use the 5 percent and 20 percent principle as given below:

5 percent or less of RDA is low – try to aim ‘low’ when counting total fat, saturated fat, cholesterol, and sodium.

20 percent or more is high – try to aim ‘high’ when counting vitamins, minerals and fibre.

Some NI panels show amount of nutrient amounts as percentage Daily Values (DV) instead of percentage RDA. A DV is gender neutral amount of a nutrient, a person on a 2000 kcal or 2500 kcal diet should consume per day. One can use the 5 percent and 20 percent principle in this case also.

4. Ingredients list: As per the Indian Prevention of Food Adulteration (PFA) Rules (1955), ingredients have to be listed in descending order of weight i.e. the dominant ingredient should be first in the list. For example, if it’s whole wheat bread, whole grain wheat flour should be the first ingredient listed. The rules also state that products using artificial sweeteners, a common, ingredient in ‘diet’ or ‘sugar free’ foods, must contain a label stating ‘Unsuitable for children’ and phenylketonurics, if the sweetener is aspartame).

5. Know what these common health food terms mean:

Low calorie - < 40 cal/serving

Calorie free or zero calories - < 5 cal/serving

Fat free or sugar free - < 1/2g of fat or sugar/serving

High fibre – 5 or more grams of fibre/serving

Nutritious And Low-Calorie Fruits And Vegetables Daily For Health And Weight Management.

Five helpings of nutritious and low-calorie fruits and vegetables daily is perfect for health and weight management.

Fruits and vegetables give you high nutrition and low calories. They have enormous therapeutic value with their rich nutritional composition, high fibre and water content and boost immunity, improve stamina and protect us from several health problems such as poor skin and hair, obesity and chronic degenerative problems like heart disease, diabetes, cataract and cancer.

Research shows diets containing substantial amounts of varied vegetables and fruits reduce chances of cancer by 20% and of stroke and cardio vascular disease by 60%.

Helps in Weight Management

Being low in calories and fat content and high in fibre, micronutrients and antioxidants with a high satiety value, they help in weight management. They work as fillers and can be treated as free foods with the exception of potatoes, sweet potatoes, jimikand and arbi, which must be used in moderation.

Keeps BP in Control

Owing to their high potassium and low sodium content, intake of fruits and vegetables is recommended for BP patients. These natural foods protect you from heart disease by preventing accumulation of cholesterol in arteries. Green leafy vegetables are a rich source of Omega-3 fats, the king present in fish, which prevents heart disease.

Maintain Blood Glucose

The fibre in fruits and vegetables plays an important role in maintaining blood glucose levels. Since diabetics are more prone to oxidative cell damage leading to complications of kidney, nerves and eyes, the antioxidants in vegetables and fruit prevent these.

However, excessive consumption of fruits or excessive consumption of fruits and juices can impair glucose control. Diabetics need to restrict their intake of mangoes, bananas and potatoes. High fibre content provides bulk in the diet for good bowel movement, and helps in maintaining good gut health and prevents constipation.

Being a reservoir of antioxidants, fresh fruits and vegetables boost immunity, prevent nutritional deficiencies like anaemia and maintain good hair and skin health.

Healthy Tips:

·         Include at least five servings of brightly coloured fruits and vegetables daily.

·         Have them in soups, salads, juices and desserts. Mix in chapattis and dals.

·         Wash them thoroughly in saline water.

·         Avoid eating cut fruits and salads outside the house to prevent infections.

·         Choose cooking methods with minimum cooking time.

EAT RIGHT DURING FESTIVE SEASON

Here is what you need to keep in mind when it comes to the right diet during the festive season to manage and maintain your weight

Festivals in India are an integral part of people’s life. They are celebrated with an assortment of mouth watering, rich, irresistible sweets and snacks. During festival season it is difficult to stick to diet because of expectations to join in the celebrations. One neither want to be snobbish nor a spoilt sport by declining every time offered those “loaded-with-calories” and sinfully delicious stuff. Here are some simple tips to avoid accumulating those extra kilos during the festival season.

Smaller Portion Size:

Small portion size of fried snacks, sweets and other fatty preparations will help in keeping weight under control.

Avoid Second Helpings:

Howsoever tempted you are just be firm and put your plate down after you are through with your first helping.

Eat Slow:

This age old theory works best here. Instead of filling the plate to brim, take fewer things at one time. Eat them slowly and gradually.

Use Low Fat Ingredients:

While preparing sweets at home, try using low fat (skimmed) milk and other dairy products. Rather than refined sugar, either switch to artificial sweetener or if possible, substitute with natural sugar like honey, jiggery and dates. Use of Dalda i.e. Vanaspati Ghee is to be avoided every time.

These days “diet” sweets and ice creams are easily available in the market. Go for them and feel less guilty. Use whole wheat flour instead of refined flour for making sweets and snacks.

Choice of Sweets:

Prefer sweets like ladoos (suji, coconut etc.), kheer, gajjar or doodhi halwa. They are nutrient dense and have fewer calories than fried sweets like gulab jamun, jalebi, bundi items etc. try to have sweets and high calorie foods in the first half of the day. Also if you want to have the fried sweets, try and have them in the first half of the day.

Dry Fruits Over Deep Fried:

If there is a choice between dry fruits and sweets, opt for dry fruits. Even if dry fruits are equally high in calories at least they are not “empty calories”. Most of the snacks and sweets are made of refined flour, which holds very less nutritive value.

Drink Water before Snacking:

To bring in the feeling of fullness, drink water before snacking. This will definitely bring down your craving and will make you eat less. Gulp few sips of hot water after having sweets for better digestion.

No to Carbonated Drinks:

Try to stay away from carbonated drinks as they add unnecessary empty calories, which will be very difficult to burn later on. Diet version of this is fine. Plain soda is a better alternative.

Exercise Regularly:

Continue with regular exercise routine; motivate yourself to run an extra mile, if you are lusting on sweets.

Share Gifted Sweets:

Don’t be greedy and keep all the sweets and chocolates that you get only for your indulgence. Be generous. Share them with young ones in the family, relative, neighbours and people in the area or those who are less fortunate.

Light Dinners:

Try to keep lunch parties instead of dinners. Have early and light dinners.

HOW TO KEEP HEALTHY WEIGHT WHILE YOU ARE PREGNANT

Just because you think you’re eating for two, doesn’t mean you allow yourself to fit into clothes meant for two. While it is completely natural to put on weight during pregnancy, you can also make sure that you remain fit and your baby, healthy. Putting on weight the healthy way will ensure that you lose it faster once you give birth.

Emphasis should be given on eating healthy rather than worrying about putting on weight. Decreasing caloric intake while breastfeeding can adversely affect the quantity of milk production. Breastfeed your child at least for a year; as it encourages you to lose unwanted fat. It is best to lose post pregnancy weight gradually by following a healthy, balanced diet and taking gentle, regular moderate exercises.

A pregnant lady needs 300 more calories per day. Walnuts, soya beans and fish give you the essential fatty acids for better fetal brain development. Fish is an excellent nutrient, but consumption should be limited due to its high mercury content because of sea water pollution. Red meats should be limited as well. Eggs and chicken, which are rich in proteins and minerals, are healthier choices. Squeezing a lemon into your meal gives vitamin C for better iron absorption. Eat smaller portions at frequent intervals to avoid bloating and keep your sugar levels stable.

Indulge in light exercises:

Exercises like walking, swimming, yoga, static cycling and stretching are fine. Your fitness program should be supervised by a professional specialising in pregnancy exercises.  Include certain exercises that are specific to pregnancy, such as pelvic floor exercises and labour breathing exercises.

What to avoid:

·         High impact exercises and lifting heavy weights.

·         Avoid over-heating.

·         After five months into your pregnancy, avoid exercises, which need you to lie on your back or which may affect your balance.

Benefits of exercising:

·         Exercise tones your body, improves stamina and relieves backache, varicose, veins, urinary leaks and swollen feet.

·         Breathing exercises improve oxygen delivery to the baby during labour, relax your muscles and help you cope with pain better.

Don’t ape Western celebs blindly:

One thing to remember is that celebs who come back to their original shape astonishingly quickly after giving birth, do so under strict professional guidance. And many of them go under the knife, too! Your first priority should be your health and breast feeding. During the immediate post-delivery period, you need 550 calories extra per day to meet your baby’s growth needs. Your baby needs to be exclusively breast fed for six months. Sudden weight loss at this stage may cost you your baby’s health and can leave you anaemic and weak. Unsupervised (and often unsuccessful) attempts at weight loss can make you feel disappointed and depressed. Accept the bodily changes as part of motherhood.

Dietician says that pregnant women need to eat at regular intervals. Energy requirements are high during first six months of lactation since additional energy is required for breast milk secretion. After the first six months of lactation, caloric requirement is lesser and weight loss can be aimed provided protein and calcium intake is adequate. Losing extra weight after pregnancy can be achieved through regular physical activity and a balanced diet. Achieving your pre-pregnancy weight a year after child birth is completely safe.

SHAPE YOUR WAIST

A slim waist can do wonders for your confidence and sex appeal but it is often the first to attract a bulge during holiday season. Fortunately, it’s also one of the easiest parts of the body to tame and get under control. A few tweaks to your lifestyle and inches can be wiped off. Here’s an all-round systematic approach to getting it done without a fuss.

Sleep Yourself Slimmer:

Going to bed early tonight is all it takes to get a slimmer waist.

A recent study has revealed that women who get at least seven hours of quality shut-eye every night are slimmer around the middle than those who get less than five hours. They discovered that not getting enough sleep disrupts a hormone in the body that regulates appetite. This is why when one’s tired and cranky, they’re more likely to eat more, especially things heavy on sugar. But the quick rush of sugar levels will slump soon after-leaving you more tired and hungry than you were before.

Ditch Stress:

Stress has been proven to cause a chunky waist. Several studies show that when we’re worked up, the stress hormone cortisol floods the body. As a result, there is extra fat stored around the tummy and waist. Even those who run for an hour on the treadmill can be battling stress and still find stubborn fat clinging to their waist. Try yoga to manage your stress levels. If you find yourself getting worked up in a traffic jam or because the kids are screaming, try this trick: take five long deep breathes through the nose and release out of the mouth. And make sure you breathe in from your lower stomach, not your chest.

How to tell the difference? When you take very deep, stomach breathes, your tummy-not your rib cage-will puff out as you inhale.

Give Up Alcohol:

According to experts, where we store fat on your body is a reflection of where we’re going wrong with our diet and lifestyle. When fat is stored on either sides of their waist, just above the beltline, it’s usually down to alcohol or sugar. Alcohol is one of the worst things for the waist. Not only does it cause you to store fat on your waist, it also irritates your intestines, which can cause unflattering bloating, known as the “booze bloat”.

To top it all off, a hangover often causes us to reach for sugary carbs and sweet snacks. You don’t have to give up your favourite tipple altogether- just make sure you have at least four alcohol-free days a  week, sip water in between each drink and, if you do end up having one too many, have eggs the morning after.

They mop up toxins in your liver and will keep you full for hours, meaning you’ll be less likely to indulge for the rest of the day.

Up Your Oil Intake:

Here’s a secret that models and actresses swear by to keep their waists taut and tiny: they eat fat. Not the bad type found in pies and bhature but the good type- the omega 3 fatty acids found in oily fish (such as salmon and mackerel), olive oil, linseed oil and nuts (walnuts and almonds). A good intake of oil helps your body burn fat, according to studies, especially around your stomach and waist.

Give Up Sit-Ups:

Instead of sit-ups, try The Plank-and exercise that’s even more effective, can be done anywhere, only takes 60 seconds and tones up your stomach and sides.

Lie face down on the floor with your elbows resting on the floor next to your chest.

Push your body up off the floor in a push-up position and support your body with your elbows, hands and the tips of your toes.

Keep your stomach muscles tight, you hips up, with your while body in a straight line. Hold for 60 seconds (on your first few attempts you might only manage to do 30 seconds).

It it’s too tough, drop your knees to the floor but still hold your stomach in and keep your back straight.

Eat Whole grains:

A recent study revealed that eating lots of wholegrain food helped shed fat from your waist. It’s thought that a diet rich in wholegrain food helps your body burn fat more efficiently, plus they boost digestion which helps clear out toxins and encourages your body to shed excess pounds.

BELLY FAT LINKED TO DEVELOPMENT OF ASTHMA

Belly fat, linked with diabetes and heart disease, and could also have a bearing on the development of asthma, research in Norway shows. Previous studies have found a link between asthma and body mass index (BMI), a height to weight ratio that is an indicator of overall obesity.

Researchers followed 23,245 adults without asthma, aged 19-55 years for 11 years, according to a statement of Norwegian University of Science and Technology. The participants had their BMI measured along with their waist circumference to test overall obesity and central obesity. Besides, they were also asked to report incidence of asthma. The results showed that people who had belly fat but were not overall obese were 1.44 times more likely to develop asthma. Additionally, people who were both centrally obese (belly fat) and obese overall were 1.81 times more susceptible.

Asthma can affect people of all sizes, but study has highlighted both the individual and combined effect of central obesity and overall obesity on asthma development.

OVERWEIGHT MOTHERS GIVE BIRTH TO FAT BABIES

Childhood obesity originates in the mother’s womb, says a new study which used the latest technology to monitor fat levels in unborn babies. These babies, part of the study at Chelsea and Westminster Hospital, west London, were found to have a similar build-up of abdominal fat that adults in their 50s have.

The study used magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) scans to investigate links between obesity in children and their mothers. It reportedly found evidence that being overweight or obese in pregnancy could result in potentially harmful changes in a baby’s fat levels in the womb, the Telegraph reports.

The study, led by the Professor of neonatal medicine at Imperial College London, found nearly a third of children had more fat than expected. Of the 105 babies – 54 boys and 51 girls a total of 31 babies had more adipose, or fat, tissue around their abdomen than normal.

Experts said the study was the first direct link that proved the weight of a mother-to-be was passed on to her child and showed that overweight mother gave birth to fat babies.

With this study it was able to detect such a clear continuum of effect of maternal BMI (Body Mass Index) on the babies. This is a very important finding indeed, opening the door to a new understanding of how a mother’s metabolism affects her baby.

LESS PROTEIN MAKES YOU HUNGRY, GORGE ON SNACKS

Want to slough off that snack habit? Then, eat more protein as too little of it makes you hungry and reach for the unhealthy food.

According to a study has found out that people whose meals contained 10 percent protein consumed 260 more calories a day than those on 15 percent protein. Not only did they eat more, but also 70 percent of the extra calories they ate were snacks between meals rather than at mealtimes.

They also learnt that raising consumption to 25 percent – was no extra help in halting over – eating.

The results show that humans have a particularly strong appetite for protein, and when the proportion of protein in the diet is low this appetite can drive excess energy intake.

For the study, the team recruited 22 Volunteers, to live and eat in a science facility. They were all of a healthy weight and were aged in the age group of 18 to 51.

While the food looked the same, they had different protein levels. The amount of fat remained constant at 30 percent of the total calories in a meal but the carbohydrate was adjusted to 40, 50 or 60 percent of meal.

The volunteers all did the same amount of exercise – one hour supervised walk per day – and did the same activities to avoid them eating out of boredom or stress.

It was found that people who consumed 10 percent protein a day ate on average an extra 1036 calories over a four day period compared with those who ate a 15 percent protein diet.

Over a year that would be enough to gain over six kilos. However, eating more than the average amount of food such as meat, fish, eggs and nuts can stop you gaining those kilos.

DIETS PLAYS A MAJOR ROLE IN HAVING A GLOWING SKIN

Diet plays an important role in maintaining the health o your skin. Your nutritional diet will consist o liberal quantities o seeds, nuts and grains, vegetables and fruits, supplemented by special protective foods like skimmed milk, vegetable oils, yoghurt, honey and yeast.
The Vitamin Power: If your skin is unusually dry and rough and have blackheads and white heads, you are probably lacking sufficient Vitamin A. The vitamins of the B group are important in producing beautiful skin. Vitamin B1 aids skin health by helping to keep the circulation normal while B2 or Riboflavin deficiency can lead to brown pigmentation and oily skin. Severe deficiency of riboflavin causes the skin under the nose and at the corners of the eyes and mouth to crack and become sore. So, diet that is rich in Vitamin B can go a long way in skin health. The antioxidants in Vitamin C are involved in the formation of collagen, and protein that bind cells and tissues together keeping your skin firm and wrinkle-free.
The Trick: One of the important food item in this connection is brewer’s yeast. Even the person whose skin seems smooth and healthy usually notices improvement in texture and glow, a week after adding two or more table spoons of brewer’s yeast to the daily diet. Take a table spoon of yeast stirred into citrus juice or water after each meal, between meals, and before retiring. Also citrus foods like oranges, grape fruit, strawberries, kiwis, and broccoli play an important role in keeping your skin looking young.
Culprits: Food like white flour, sugar and eatables made with them, also tea, coffee, and soft drinks deplete energy and dehydrate your skin. Replace refined carbohydrate foods like white bread, cookies and pasta with their whole grain cousins that work as fibre as well as antioxidants. Whole grain helps eliminate toxins and acts as a detoxified agent for your body.
